I was going to give this place a 3-star and my wife got on my case, probably due to the desserts and the Southern antipasto appetizer which she rated high. Shrimp and grits: i think my shrimp were a little overcooked. minor thing for me, nothing I would send back. It was still good, but it was something i noticed (since I do that myself on occasion). The entire dish is covered with a brown gravy which was a first for me. It isn't a cheesy/dairy sauce that you often get with the shrimp & grits. Southern Antipasto w/ black eyed pea hummus was a huge hit (big appetizer shared amongst 5 people. We also ordered the deviled eggs--they weren't bad, but I wasn't crazy about them. Our table ordered 2 desserts: Pluff mud cake and South Carolina State Fair (fried cinnamon dough, peaches, maybe something maple on it). The state fair might be a special since I don't see it on the online dessert menu, but that was excellent. Since we were all stuffed, we shared the state fair and took the mud cakes home. Our waitress, Tiffani(sp?) was excellent, attentive and had a quick-witted response when I complained about the creamer containers (shaped like cows) dispensing milk from the cows mouth instead of the udder. This wasn't the first time for some in our party, but it was my first visit--I'm sure we'll be back!

2.5 stars because the crab cake tasted like it was rotten, but the service was excellent. Fried oysters were good; it is hard to ruin those. Grilled caesar was meh. Grilled romaine lettuce is delightful, but develops a tough consistancy and cutting it with a butter knife is impossible. Ask for a steak knife if you dare try it. The dressing was not tossed in and it might have been mayonnaise. My husband liked his shrimp burger, but I am starting to question his taste...

On our third visit to Fripp Island, we decided to try Sweetgrass because we read the great reviews and the view sounded beautiful. We had family join us from Charlotte for a special evening. The place is lovely and the setting charming. It all started well enough, but when it took 20 minutes to get two beers, a cocktail, a glass of wine and a soda it was a harbinger of things to come. Our salads came out before the appetizers and then we waited ... and waited. It was well over an hour between our appetizer and the entrees. We sat there staring at dirty dishes until we finally asked our very green and inattentive waiter to remove them from our table. The manager or owner, I assume, stopped by at one point to mumble a thank us for our patience and say the food would be out shortly. It was another half an hour before the food arrived. When the food arrived it was good, not great. Some of the items were cold. By that time is was close to 9 p.m. (we sat down at 7 p.m.) and we just wanted to get out of there. No offer to comp a drink or dessert and barely an acknowledgement that we had a significant bill and experienced lousy service and a ridiculously long wait. Originally, I was going to give them two stars because the food was okay but the more I think about it, this place doesn't even rate a "meh". Really unprofessional all the way around.

Great food, great service, great sunset! We have a house on Fripp Island so it's about a 30 min drive but worth it! The ambiance and decor is upscale beachy- very nice. We sat outside on the screened in porch- so we had a beautiful view of the marina and sunset. We split the fried deviled eggs (3 halves to an order). They were great- they fry the 1/2 egg white then add the filling. We all had fresh fish for entrees- everyone was happy. My main take-away is that it was a great way to get fresh fish that wasn't fried! Definitely more pricey than other restaurants in the area but also nicer and higher quality food.

Delicious food and delightful service. It was for a rehearsal dinner and was just perfect. The location is very pleasant, wait staff were attentive and professional. If you find yourself nearby then I recommend going for a nice relaxing meal. They really fixed the place up from what it was before.

The food is only surpassed by the beautiful view--overlooking the marina. The shrimp and grits are the best around. The shrimp is lightly fried--which gives an incredible crunch to contrast with the creaminess of the grits! A must try--again and again!

What a great restaurant! I ate here 4 times over the course of 2 weeks visiting Dataw. The food and service were consistent all nights. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Chef Penn TenEyck, former chef at the Dataw Club, now owns and operates Sweetgrass and is their executive chef. He's kept some of the menu items from the previous owner (deep fried deviled eggs), and has added many more. The steak salad, seared tuna, swordfish and chicken were each excellent. Fresh ingredients, expertly prepared, great sauces that accentuated each dish without overwhelming it and properly sized portions. In Beaufort you won't have a better meal and you'll pay $10 more per entree trying. Save room for dessert. Chef Penn's Mom makes the desserts. The multi-layered carrot cake, New York cheese cake, chocolate mousse pie and coconut layer cake were each outstanding. Dataw residents now have a gem of a restaurant and nearby communities including Fripp Island should highly consider Sweetgrass. If the weather is nice, eat on the screened-in porch overlooking the yacht club harbor and watch the sun set as you enjoy your meal. Can't wait to be back on Dataw to eat here again and again.

While vacationing on Harbor Island, my family wanted to take me someplace nice for my birthday. Most everything seemed far away but this restaurant got fairly good reviews, was about 20 minutes away and looked like a nice setting. The ambiance was very nice and the service was friendly and attentive. The menu comes on a clipboard and seems a little simple and lacks adequate descriptions on the items and how they are prepared. The shrimp and grits sounded interesting as a local specialty but when it arrived it was topped with some sort of gravy that tasted like bacon grease and a few shrimp surrounding the sides. The fish was over cooked (a problem most places) as well as overdone shrimp. The crab cakes were more breading than crab. Nothing was terrible but nothing was really good either. Maybe the kitchen was understaffed that night. It made my birthday memorable because there was nothing all that memorable.

My wife and I travel to Fripp Island quite a bit. Instead of going to the usual restaurants such as Docksides on Port Royal we decided to give this restaurant a try because of the reviews. The restaurant is on Dataw island. It located at the Marina which is 3 miles back on the island. So here is the low down. For appetizers we had deviled eggs and shrimp fritters. The deviled eggs had a piece lump crab which gave the eggs absolutely no added flavor. The shrimp fritters were good. Both were okay not anything you would write home about. For dinner my wife and I both ordered the seafood platter that had a crafty name. The choices were either fried or grilled. So we ordered grilled. So when our food arrived there were 5 over cooked shrimp the size of my pinkie. They were drowned in butter and had parsley all over them. No sign of being grilled then there was a crab cake that had so much filler that it was like eating a biscuit. Again no sign of being grilled if that is even possible. Then there was a piece of flounder again no sign of being grilled drowned in butter and the proverbial parsley all over it. So what they are calling grilled was sautéed or broiled. If you are going for the view or atmosphere of the restaurant it is beautiful. If you are going for the food do not waste your time or money. Somewhere my wife saw reviews and there was 11 that were excellent or very good. I would bet any amount of money that those reviews were from staff or family.

We came across this place by chance from checking yelp for restaurants in the area, we were a little concerned because of some old reviews but when we stopped at the guard gate, we asked if the food was good at the place and he said "Yes, the food is amazing and he knows good food!" And pointed us in the right direction. When we got there, we were greeted by friendly front desk staff and our server was super friendly as well. The restaurant itself was very calm and relaxing, super cute but that doesn't even top the food. Every single thing we order was wonderful and we had an appetizer, salad, entrees and desserts. Trust me, my husband NEVER likes any food at restaurants and he loved everything we ordered! All of 4 of us in our party, including my daughter, all agreed, this was by far 1 of the best places we have ever ate!! My friend said she would offer her first born to the chef :) We have absolutely no complaints about this place, it's a must try!!

So funny bc as we'd waited for an hour for our food to come to the table I was ABOUT to give a not so great review, and there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. BUT luckily right then it came and YALL...the food was absolutely incredible. Worth the wait. The service was slow and it took 30 min to get bread to the table but at the end the food was absolutely worth it! The crispy chicken over a bed of mashed potatoes (best mashed potatoes I've ever had) was out of this world. I'd definitely recommend it...just don't be in a hurry ;)

Visited Sweetgrass while vacationing on Harbor Island. Not many choices for restaurants in the area, and we were relying heavily on reviews we found online to find a decent place to eat. I emailed the restaurant ahead of time to find out if they were child-friendly, as it seemed upscale and a bit pricy. I received a response within a few hours letting me know that they did have a kids' menu. Sweetgrass did not disappoint! The shrimp and grits was definitely the best I've ever eaten. I absolutely loved all the flavors they combined with the bacon, fried okra, and deep fried egg (something I've never even heard of!). My husband loved his steak and fries too. The bread for starters and the coconut cake for dessert were also delicious. Service started out great as we were the second party to arrive on a Thursday evening. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. Would have given five stars except the service got very slow at the end of our meal when the kids were getting restless, I assume because the restaurant was getting busy. Overall worth it though, because the food was excellent.

We stopped in last Thursday evening at around 6:30pm. The place was almost empty but we were greeted and offered inside on the screened in patio or inside. We choose outside. Our server was prompt and courteous. We started with fried green tomatoes with crab meat and boursin cheese. These were flavorful and you received a nice sized portion. We then remembered we wanted to try their fried oysters and we placed our order. The only reason why I gave them 3 stars instead of 4 was the timing of the plates coming to our table. We told our waitress that we had nowhere to be (that usually spells disaster) but we enjoyed the sun setting and the weather. You get a side salad with your entree but the oysters came out with our salads shortly (we weren't near finished with our salads) before we received our entrees!! There actually wasn't a place to put the entree plate. Having said all of this.....my wife had the scallops, risotto and pecan brown butter and I got the shrimp/oysters and grits with tasso gravy. Both of our dishes were very good and I thought appropriately priced. Dinner with one drink and two appetizers ran us about $80. When we were walking out we could see the insdie of the restaurant was full and people were now being seated outside. We'll go back when we get a chance and see if the kitchen and wait staff are on a better page.

We have been coming to Fripp Island for 6 or more years and have eaten at most of the restaurants. Sweetgrass is by far the best closest resturant to Fripp. The service was very good and the location, decor and ambiance just doesn't get more Low Country than this. We ate on the back porch and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, from the 50 yr old to the 8 yr old. The fried Pickled green tomatoes were perfect, the pimiento cheese was the table favorite. The sides were incredible I do not remember any resturant Having as many unique sides as Sweetgrass. Everyone enjoyed their meal even my 15 yr old daughter enjoyed the praline chicken and Mac. Since it was near the end of our trip and I was really tired of shrimp I had steak cooked just the way I ordered it with fried okra and collard greens all were just right. We liked Sweetgrass so much that we are going back again tonight.
